Depolymerized Lignin as Bio-epoxy Resin Precursor

LignoValue product as BPA alternative

Steady Progress at VITO

June 2025 marked another milestone moment for sustainable innovation: the LignoValue pilot plant has just completed its second large-scale delivery of depolymerized lignin for the LEGACY project, a development we’re proud of, and one that motivates us to keep moving forward.

This material, composed of soluble and reactive lignin oligomers, was developed using advanced depolymerization techniques. It’s now being further processed by the SPOT team’s material researchers, with the aim of producing 100% biobased epoxy resins for use in industrial flooring, a valuable contribution in greening the construction sector.

Beyond technical performance, this work is also part of a broader effort to replace harmful bisphenols in coatings with safer, bio-based alternatives. While there’s still a way to go, we see this as a positive step toward healthier and more environmentally responsible materials.

The LEGACY project is supported by the European Union, NextGenerationEU through the Belgium Builds Back Circular (BBBC) initiative, as part of the National Plan for Recovery and Resilience (NPRR).
