LEGACY Progress in Lignin-Based Precursors

Scaling up epoxy precursors from lignin

Exciting Milestone in the LEGACY Project!

As of August 2025, VITO is thrilled to announce a significant advancement in our LEGACY project. We've successfully synthesized over 5 kg of glycidylated lignin (GDL) from depolymerized lignin produced at our state-of-the-art pilot plant facilities, Pilar II and LignoValue as an epoxy precursor.

This achievement marks a pivotal step in scaling up the glycidylation process, providing essential experimental data for our VITO colleagues, who are diligently constructing the LCA and techno-economic assessment. Following exhaustive characterization and rigorous quality control of the GDL product, we'll supply enough  to formulate and produce a suitable full bio-based epoxy resin tailored for high-performance coating applications.

This collaborative effort underscores our commitment to advancing sustainable materials and reinforcing VITO's leadership in bio-based innovation.

The LEGACY project is supported by the European Union, NextGenerationEU, through the Belgium Builds Back Circular (BBBC3) initiative, as part of the National Plan for Recovery and Resilience (NPRR).
