Workshop with Volvo Car Gent

Looking for a green alternative for epoxy flooring

Driving Sustainability Forward, Together!

We were proud to welcome Volvo Car Gent to VITO for a focused workshop dedicated to the progress of the LEGACY project, a collaborative effort to develop biobased, BPA-free epoxy coatings that are safe, sustainable, and industrially viable.

Volvo Car Gent, as a key use-case, brings real-world perspective to the table. Their strong environmental commitment includes concerns over the potential release of toxic components from BPA-based epoxy flooring, especially during routine cleaning and washing procedures in their production facilities.

Through cutting-edge research and the use of lignin, a renewable and underutilized resource, the LEGACY project is creating high-performance, BPA-free resins that ensure sustainability, strong performance, and safe end-of-life behaviour. These coatings are being rigorously tested, both in the lab and under real industrial conditions, to validate performance and prevent harmful leaching into water systems.

This workshop marks another milestone in aligning industrial needs with scientific innovation. Together, we are proving that safer, sustainable alternatives are not only possible, they’re within reach.

Special thanks to Wim Cooman and Wim Steenbrugge from Volvo Car Gent, and to our colleagues from VITO: Karolien Vanbroekhoven, Miet Van Dael, Johan Vanhunsel, Karolien Peeters, Lise Asscherickx, Yentl Pareja Rodriguez, Seppe Vander Heyden, and Marc Comi Bonachi.
